Documenting that special newborn stage is so important. Those first few months of your baby’s life will be gone in a flash!
Before you know it they’ll be heading towards important milestones; rolling over, sitting up unassisted, taking their first steps.
Important baby milestones
Each of these phases of your baby’s early life is so precious, which is why our newborn portrait sessions are so popular amongst new parents.
They give you a unique opportunity to create long-lasting memories in a relaxed environment, amongst the chaos that usually goes along with the arrival of a new baby!
What you might not expect from your newborn session
We thought we’d share a few things you might not expect when you consider what your newborn session will be like.
Your newborn photography session should be a really enjoyable experience, so we want to do our best to iron out any worries you might have in advance (we know these are so common for new parents!).
1. Newborn baby portrait sessions involve a bit of downtime
There is a lot of cuddling, soothing and feeding that goes on behind the scenes in the creation of those soft, sleepy newborn portraits you’ll have seen all over our Instagram.
We always leave plenty of time for your newborn session - sometimes they take up to 3 hours. Giving ourselves this time means that these sessions can be totally baby-led, giving you time to relax and really enjoy your time in the studio!
2. It’s a great opportunity for you to get in front of the camera too!
Something really special about newborn sessions is when we get a chance to take photographs of proud parents with their precious little one.
You might feel a little nervous about having pictures taken, but there’s no reason to be! Your time in the studio will be completely stress-free, allowing us to take relaxed, natural portraits of your beautiful family.
Older siblings are welcome along to newborn sessions too! These photographs of your children together will make such precious keepsakes for them as they grow older.
3. Sometimes babies don’t feel like sleeping (and that’s totally fine!)
Newborn photography typically involves your baby sleeping for much of the photoshoot and your photographer capturing portraits with baby’s eyes closed. But, as with everything else in life, things don’t always go the way we expect them to.
Sometimes, babies are so interested in what’s going on around them that they are awake for some, or all, of the session. And that’s totally fine!
Your baby will look perfect no matter what they do. Whether they sleep or are awake, we’ll be sure to capture every little detail in beautiful portraits that you’ll be itching to put up on the wall!
4. There is no wrong time to have portraits taken of your baby
If this year has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected. The lockdown restrictions imposed in the spring of 2020 meant that the studio was closed for a period of time, but parents of newborns didn’t miss out!
Now that the studio has reopened, we were able to invite families back. We took beautiful photographs of their little ones, despite them being slightly older than is typical during a newborn photography shoot.
Although we usually recommend scheduling in your baby’s portraits when they’re between 5-14 days old, there is no wrong time to take their photographs.
Your baby’s personality will really start to shine through just after the newborn stage, and they’ll be all wriggles and curious expressions. This is really fun to capture!
